Chappaqua, New York—June 4, 2018—CareMount Medical, the largest independent multi-specialty medical group in New York State, announces Rafael Axen, MD, has been promoted to Medical Director and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.
“Dr. Axen has played an integral role in CareMount Medical’s transformation over the last several years,” said Scott D. Hayworth, MD, FACOG, President and CEO of CareMount Medical. “We are excited to have him step into this new role to help manage the growth of our perioperative services across the Hudson Valley.”
As Medical Director, Dr. Axen oversees the utilization of anesthesia services in CareMount Medical’s operating rooms and procedure suites, and he develops and evaluates the medical and surgical services as well as perioperative protocols and policies across all of CareMount Medical’s locations. As Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Dr. Axen recruits and manages the Anesthesiology Department and conducts strategic planning for anesthesia services and quality initiatives. He will also serve as Compliance Officer of The Ambulatory Surgery Center of Westchester.
Dr. Axen oversaw the opening of CareMount Medical’s newest surgical suite, located at its Oakwood Commons campus in the Town of Poughkeepsie. The 3,400 square foot surgical suite features two operating rooms, five pre/post recovery bays, nurses’ station, check-in counter and waiting area. The following departments are currently performing surgical procedures in the suite including Urology, OB/GYN, Plastic Surgery, and Dermatology.
Dr. Axen joined CareMount Medical in 2006. Prior to becoming Medical Director, Dr. Axen served as Associate Medical Director and Director of Anesthesia Services. Dr. Axen, who is board-certified in anesthesiology, will continue to provide clinical services at all of CareMount Medical’s anesthesiology locations; The Ambulatory Surgery Center of Westchester, The Yorktown Ambulatory Surgery Center, and MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie. He has privileges at MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie.
Dr. Axen received his medical degree from Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School. He completed his transitional year internship at Atlantic Health System and his residency in anesthesiology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center.
