Nephrology and Hypertension

The Nephrology department at CareMount Medical is devoted to caring for one’s kidneys.

The Nephrology department at CareMount Medical is devoted to caring for one’s kidneys. Kidney disease may be a function of an intrinsic kidney abnormality or may be the effect of other processes in your body such as hypertension or diabetes. Our department is dedicated to improving the care of patients afflicted with kidney diseases.

Kidney stones affect 1 in every 10 people nationwide. Kidney stones are not life threatening, but are one of the most painful conditions we encounter as doctors. Patients often describe the pain as being similar to childbirth. Kidney stones have plagued patients since the time of Hippocrates.

Kidney stones can occur in the kidney itself, the ureter (which is the tube that connects the kidney to the bladder), or in the bladder. Kidney stones often get stuck between the junction of the kidney and the ureter and/or the junction between the ureter and bladder.

Kidney stones often recur and it is estimated that 50% of patients will have another stone within 10 years of their first stone. Kidney stones are on the rise, especially in women and children.

Kidney stones are preventable.
